Generation Z - DMMS 2009

We recently attended the Digital Media and Marketing Summit, which was held this year at the Melbourne Hilton on the Park. The day long event was filled with a group of speakers most of which were agency representatives talking about case studies of successful campaigns and statistics. It was generally interesting but in my opinion there weren't many WOW moments. Which I guess is a good thing as it means that everyone is on the same page when it comes to digital media, but on the other hand it does mean that were still not really pushing the envelope and creating truly amazing ground breaking campaigns.

That being said though, a lot of the time we are guided by our client's needs and therefore usually limited in our ability to shine, its rare you to find a client who is a go-all-out no holds barred type of client.

The most interesting speech for me was one conducted by Jeff Brookes of Habbo. The hugely successful virtual word for teens. Based on his stats, Habbo has an active user base of around 155m users, an amazing figure. But what was most interesting about his talk was his discussion on the survey they conducted of their user base, the generation now referred to as Generation Z (or Generation We as opposed to Generation Y who are referred to as Generation Me). These new up and coming youngsters of today, currently aged between 8-15, are the generation who have decided that the rest of us have stuffed up the world and they are the ones who are going to fix it.

Jeff discussed how this new generation are a group of highly connected and community based people, who have a much stronger affinity to co-operation, family values, working together and strong morals. They are less likely to go out and get pissed, pollute the world, or set their neighbour on fire. The are the first generation to have grown up completely immersed in an internet world, and have very strong international connections to prove it. Most of them have grown up in multi-cultural societies and as such have a strong understanding of each other's cultural differences or similarities as the case may be.

It was fascinating to hear the statistics of 150 million like minded and driven individuals, and interesting to understand how similar they are in their views and opinions. I for one hope that they are able to maintain this connected and good willed attitude, as it will no doubt benefit us all and propel an already fast moving world into hyper-drive, especially when they are all after the same thing.

Jeff also remarked on the companies who have tried to market to these people, of which all traditional marketing techniques no longer apply. You have to prove yourself to these people, show what value you can add and how you are going to contribute to them and their community. Blasting an ad in their face will get you blacklisted faster than a Cialis mail server. Good Luck to us all.

We've now settled into our new offices here in South Yarra. After spending the first few months of the year as squatters in the windy Docklands Precinct, it has been a fresh and preferred change to move to the sunny suburb.

Located just next to the South Yarra train station, our new office is in a brand new building which has given us plenty of space and inspiration to keep on building our business and service our clients.

Flying download speeds

Recently in South Africa it was found out that the latest ways aren't always the greatest ways. An IT worker who was frustrated with the speed (or lack thereof) of the nations biggest broadband company, Telcom, sent a data-card on a 80km strapped to the leg of a pigeon, he simultaneously tried transferring the data over the internet to the same location. The pigeons journey and extraction from the data card took just over 2 hours. In the meantime, the internet transfer had completed a whole 4%, adding a whole new meaning to "giving someone the bird"
